The Library Monitor will be assigned to the After School Zone; their primary responsibility is to provide a safe and pleasant atmosphere in the library and its periphery.
The position requires working with the public of all ages, primarily pre-teens and teens, enforcing library policies, answering simple directional questions, and providing other basic assistance.
The ideal candidate is adaptable to a variety of situations, remains aware of their surroundings for potential issues, and ideally comfortable with conflict resolution if any issues arise.

The Library Monitor position is an at-will, part-time position and does not receive any insurance benefits.
Distinguishing Characteristics Under general supervision, assists library staff to provide a secure environment in and around the library premises.
In addition, the Library Safety Coordinator may assist with customer service needs to help maintain a pleasant, safe and friendly atmosphere in the library particularly in managing library use during after school hours.
The incumbent in this position has responsibility for providing a respectful, inviting, and pleasant atmosphere in the library and its periphery.
The position requires working with the public of all ages, enforcing policies, answering simple directional questions and providing other basic assistance in the library.
Representative Duties / Qualifications Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Calmly and professionally explaining library use policies and procedures Performing foot patrol of the Library facility Maintaining a quiet atmosphere in the Library Assisting with enforcement of relevant library policies as necessary Issuing one time computer use passes to patrons Assisting customers with use of self-check machines Contacting the Police Department when necessary Other related duties as assigned DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:
Security procedures and emergency responses Basic customer service techniques Simple library operations Ability to:
Follow written and oral directions Deal effectively with the public Work cooperatively with other staff members and police Learn simple library circulation techniques, including use of self-check machines Give prompt, friendly, and courteous assistance to patrons Analyze situations quickly and objectively Recognize potential dangers and determine proper courses of action Deal with stressful situations firmly, tactfully and with respect for individual rights Perform physical work, including safely lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs Remain calm, take appropriate action, and maintain a professional attitude in situations encountered Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Education:
Candidate must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience:
At least one year of experience working with young adults REQUIRED.
Two or more years is highly desirable.
Experience working with young adults in a capacity such as school monitor or lunch-duty aide is desirable, but not required.
Additionally, any experience in security, safety, loss prevention or law enforcement is desirable, but not required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS Applicants must be able to work in and around the library for a set schedule of hours.
Acceptable employment and background investigation check.
Responsible for dealing with a variety of problems throughout the large, and sometimes very crowded, building.

This position is a part-time, at will position and the position does not receive any insurance or leave benefits.
Employees in this category are typically enrolled in PARS, an alternate retirement system, and employees have a 6.
2% payroll deduction towards PARS.
If employees are otherwise eligible for CalPERS retirement system, they wil be enrolled in CalPERS and employees have an 8% payroll deductions towards PERS.
The City does not participate in Social Security except for the required Medicare program, which is a 1.
